Education

Our work in infrastructure and medical support has been developed to broaden and encourage education.

For Castellan, education is a gateway to empowerment and sustainability. We ensure nobody is left behind and promote adult education by running skills based workshops, this encourages independence and self-empowerment.

Medical Impacts

Castellan recognises how essential medical training and education is. Some of the children that Castellan have sponsored since 1997 have been able to access bursaries for higher education and university. Castellan have also run midwifery courses in rural villages and dignity kit workshops for local schools.

Water & Infrastructure

Over the years, Castellan has worked persistently to provide clean drinking water solutions. This includes the construction of solar-powered boreholes, new latrines, and hand-washing facilities. Additionally, Castellan has also facilitated the construction of sewers and the building of a girls’ toilet block.

Education

Education is the foundation for social and economic development. By building school infrastructure, we can ensure education continues no matter the weather. At Castellan we also take a focus on adult education, where running workshops can empower individuals with new skills.

School Infrastructure

We have been involved in countless school infrastructure projects, from the construction of classrooms to the redesign of a new roof. These projects aim to increase school attendance by removing class cancellations. During the wet season (usually August-September) school can be cancelled if classrooms aren’t dry. Our projects ensure class time is optimised by reinforcing how important school infrastructure is to a child’s education.

Adult Education

The empowerment of women has always been a concern for Castellan. Education can help them escape poverty. Too many women face a lifetime of child-birth and hard labour in the rice fields if they miss schooling. An opportunity for them to acquire dressmaking and crafting skills, we have seen, can provide a chance for some income and independence. We ran a workshop in the Kankuntu ladies skill centre.

Medical Impacts

Our work in the medical sphere is vital for supporting a safer medical practice, education, and gender equality.  We empower the children you sponsor by giving them the opportunity to attend university and we have run several workshops on safe birthing practices.

Bursaries

Many of the children first  sponsored by Castellan (since 1997) have gone on to become nurses, doctors and teachers. This is because they have been able to access bursaries that have supported their journeys into higher education. Bursaries can also support students in purchasing laptops for study, which enables them to continue their studies and supports future job prosperities. This has helped encourage gender equality in higher education.

Midwifery Training

Castellan have been able to run midwifery training courses to provide rural villages with the skills to ensure safer birthing practices. In 2017, UK midwives and an Obs. & Gynae surgeon travel on a mission to train rural village women or Traditional Birthing Assistants and maternity staff at a regional hospital. These training courses offer a knowledge exchange that can be passed on to other villages and midwives in the region.

Dignity Kits

Girl students lose an average of 2/3 days of schooling a month from not having access to sanitary products. They are frightened to go to school for fear of not only the embarrassment but also the chance of soiling  their  only  school uniform. Dignity Kits are an essential way to ensure girls can continue to go to school. Castellan volunteers attended schools to provide these kits!

Water & Infrastructure

With clean water projects we can fight poverty at the root. By building borehole wells or constructing ways to ensure school compound cleanliness, we can provide a village with safe drinking water and a school with basic sanitation.

Clean Water Solutions

Clean water solutions are any project that involve improving sanitation. Recently in Bwiam, toilets at the junior school had collapsed and only one cubicle was working. CAT assisted the school by constructing new latrines with 12 cubicles, one side for boys and one for girls. This not only provided more sanitation at the school, but improved attendance!

Borehole Wells

Castellan has constructed a number of borehole wells that are solar powered. A recent project in Bwiam village on Tobacco road has seen donations to Castellan used to build a well. This gives the village access to clean water in a safer and convenient way. When water is more accessible, villages can grow their own crops and support themselves.
